On Sunday, Mothering Sunday – Lent 4, there will be a service of Taize in Christ and the Epiphany Church . Taize began in July 1940 by Brother Roger Louis Schuz-Marsauche. Brother Roger’s dream was to live in community with others who would practice the essential dimension of the Gospel in a manner that would offer a response of Christian reconciliation and hope in the face of the horrors of the war. He found a place for such a community in the village of Taize , just north of Cluny in France . One thousand years earlier, Cluny had been the site of one of the great medieval monastic traditions of the church.

Taize is a time for prayer, renewal, reflection and worship and is especially meaningful during the season of Lent. The usual Taize service is based upon the historic Service of the Word with some variation. The singing, silence, scripture and prayer at Taize are central to the worship. The candlelight and repetitive refrains of the music allow the participants to center their thoughts on prayer. It is a time to leave behind the fast pace of life filled with noise, activity, work, talking, texting and transporting. Entering into this worship requires us to leave our hurried lives and slow down, calm our spirits, be silent and enjoy a leisurely time with God. There is no Eucharist or sermon during a Taize service – the experience has the opportunity of deepening our faith through the power of prayer. All are encouraged to participate as the Spirit moves them whether that be in song, prayer, or quiet meditation. Icons are used to provide a visual meditative setting. The icons are traditional representation of events in the life of Christ and provide “windows to heaven”. The icon that will be used on Sunday,  March 10th at Taize will be appropriate to the season with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemene .

All are invited to join us for this special time in God’s presence.  Come and join us as the pilgrims did so long ago to participate in the mystery of prayer.
